Sermon on the Mount – Hallowed be Thy Name—Adorable One

Hymn 117
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty,
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy, darkness cannot hide Thee,
Though the eyes of sinful men Thy glory cannot see.
Thou alone art holy, there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty,
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky and sea;
Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty,
Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

The Holy Bible

Matt. 6:9

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Mark 12:29, 32

The first of all the commandments is . . .there is one God; and there is none other but he.

Gen. 1:1, 2, 26, 31; Gen. 2:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Deut. 32:3, 4

I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect:

Gen. 2:6, 7, 19

But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground.

And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

Gen. 3:17, 19

And unto Adam he said, . . . dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Is. 45:5, 9, 11-13

I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.

Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways.

Is. 42: 8

I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give unto another, neither my praise to graven images.

Acts 2:21

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

I Kings 18:21, 22, 24, 26, 36, 38-39

Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

Then said Elijah unto the people, . . . call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered.

And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.

Is. 33:22

For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

Is. 46:9-10, 13

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:. .. .I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not tarry.

Joel 2:21, 23-27

Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things. I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, . . . And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else.

Matt. 21:1, 11, 9

When they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, . . . The multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.. . . . Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

Mark 16:9, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week. . . he appeared unto the eleven . . . . And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. … And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

Acts 3:1, 2, 6-8

Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.

James 5:14, 15

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Mal 4:2

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings;

Science and Heath with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 16:28

Hallowed be Thy name.

Adorable One.

SH 497:5-6

We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God.

SH 515:16-20

The eternal Elohim includes the forever universe. The name Elohim is in the plural, but this plurality of Spirit does not imply more than one God, nor does it imply three persons in one. It relates to the oneness, the tri-unity of Life, Truth, and Love.

SH 523:22-27

Throughout the first chapter of Genesis and in three verses of the second, — in what we understand to be the spiritually scientific account of creation, — it is Elohim (God) who creates. From the fourth verse of chapter two to chapter five, the creator is called Jehovah, or the Lord.

SH 590:20-4

Lord God.Jehovah.

This double term is not used in the first chapter of Genesis, the record of spiritual creation. It is introduced in the second and following chapters, when the spiritual sense of God and of infinity is disappearing from the recorder’s thought, — when the true scientific statements of the Scriptures become clouded through a physical sense of God as finite and corporeal. From this follow idolatry and mythology, — belief in many gods, or material intelligences, as the opposite of the one Spirit, or intelligence, named Elohim, or God.

SH 527:21-28

Genesis ii. 19. And out of the ground the Lord God [Jehovah] formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

Here the lie represents God as repeating creation, but doing so materially, not spiritually, and asking a prospective sinner to help Him.

SH 177:15

In the Scriptural allegory of the material creation, Adam or error, which represents the erroneous theory of life and intelligence in matter, had the naming of all that was material. These names indicated matter’s properties, qualities, and forms. But a lie, the opposite of Truth, cannot name the qualities and effects of what is termed matter, and create the so-called laws of the flesh, nor can a lie hold the preponderance of power in any direction against God, Spirit and Truth.

SH 338:12-15, 21-25

XXIX. The word Adam is from the Hebrew adamah, signifying the red color of the ground, dust, nothingness. Divide the name Adam into two syllables, and it reads, a dam, or obstruction. … Here a dam is not a mere play upon words; it stands for obstruction, error, even the supposed separation of man from God, and the obstacle which the serpent, sin, would impose between man and his creator.

SH 524:1-12

The idolatry which followed this material mythology is seen in the Phoenician worship of Baal, in the Moabitish god Chemosh, in the Moloch of the Amorites, in the Hindoo Vishnu, in the Greek Aphrodite, and in a thousand other so-called deities.

It was also found among the Israelites, who constantly went after “strange gods.” They called the Supreme Being by the national name of Jehovah. In that name of Jehovah, the true idea of God seems almost lost. God becomes “a man of war,” a tribal god to be worshipped, rather than Love, the divine Principle to be lived and loved.

SH 143:26-31

Mind is the grand creator, and there can be no power except that which is derived from Mind. If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name.

SH 275:10

To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is. Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, combine as one, — and are the Scriptural names for God. All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God. These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love. No wisdom is wise but His wisdom; no truth is true, no love is lovely, no life is Life but the divine; no good is, but the good God bestows.

SH 93:22-25

In Christian Science, Spirit, as a proper noun, is the name of the Supreme Being. It means quantity and quality, and applies exclusively to God.

SH 94:1-6

Jesus taught but one God, one Spirit, who makes man in the image and likeness of Himself, — of Spirit, not of matter. Man reflects infinite Truth, Life, and Love. The nature of man, thus understood, includes all that is implied by the terms “image” and “likeness” as used in Scripture.

SH 507:6

Spirit names and blesses all. Without natures particularly defined, objects and subjects would be obscure, and creation would be full of nameless offspring, — wanderers from the parent Mind, strangers in a tangled wilderness.

SH 186:32

The human mind has been an idolater from the beginning, having other gods and believing in more than the one Mind.

SH 187:6-10

Here you may see how so-called material sense creates its own forms of thought, gives them material names, and then worships and fears them. With pagan blindness, it attributes to some material god or medicine an ability beyond itself.

SH 372:8

The Science of being, in which all is divine Mind, or God and His idea, would be clearer in this age, but for the belief that matter is the medium of man, or that man can enter his own embodied thought, bind himself with his own beliefs, and then call his bonds material and name them divine law.

SH 391:24-26

Disease has no intelligence to declare itself something and announce its name. Mortal mind alone sentences itself.

SH 196:31-6

The press unwittingly sends forth many sorrows and diseases among the human family. It does this by giving names to diseases and by printing long descriptions which mirror images of disease distinctly in thought. A new name for an ailment affects people like a Parisian name for a novel garment. Every one hastens to get it. A minutely described disease costs many a man his earthly days of comfort.

SH 270:5-10

Matter and Mind are opposites. One is contrary to the other in its very nature and essence; hence both cannot be real. If one is real, the other must be unreal. Only by understanding that there is but one power, — not two powers, matter and Mind, — are scientific and logical conclusions reached.

SH 109:4

Christian Science reveals incontrovertibly that Mind is All-in-all, that the only realities are the divine Mind and idea. This great fact is not, however, seen to be supported by sensible evidence, until its divine Principle is demonstrated by healing the sick and thus proved absolute and divine. This proof once seen, no other conclusion can be reached.

SH 483:27-30

Christian Science does honor God as no other theory honors Him, and it does this in the way of His appointing, by doing many wonderful works through the divine name and nature.

SH 616:28-2, 8-19 (Chapter, “Fruitage”)

GRATEFUL FOR MANY BLESSINGS

In the year 1901, Christian Science found me a hopeless invalid. I had suffered for seven years previous with a very painful back, the result of an operation. I could get no rest or sleep at night, as I could not lie down, but had to sit propped in a chair with pillows around me. . .. I was advised to buy Science and Health, which I did, and the study of this book has healed my back entirely. Christian Science has also cured me of longstanding catarrh of the throat, and neuralgia with which I had been afflicted from childhood. Before coming into Science I had doctored with three of the best physicians in Seattle, but none could give me relief.

I am no longer a sufferer, but rejoice exceedingly in Christian Science. God’s promise has been fulfilled to me, “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.”  — E. O., Georgetown, Wash.

SH 135:26

Christianity as Jesus taught it was not a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light.

SH 140:8-12

We shall obey and adore in proportion as we apprehend the divine nature and love Him understandingly, warring no more over the corporeality, but rejoicing in the affluence of our God.

Hymn 444
I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.
I girded thee, I girded thee,
Though thou hast not even known Me.
But know that from the rising sun
To the west there is none beside Me,
For I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.

I am the Truth, there is none else;
There is no Truth beside Me.
Infinite light, bountiful, bright,
Is ever present to guide thee.
Beloved and free, eternally,
Perfect peace and joy I provide thee,
For I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.

Innocent one, sinless and pure,
Nothing can ever divide thee.
Governed by Love, you’re safe and secure;
I am forever beside thee.
So rest and know wher-e’er you go,
Home and heav’n cannot be denied thee,
For I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.

Hymn 10
All power is given unto our Lord,
On Him we place reliance;
With truth from out His sacred word
We bid our foes defiance.
With Him we shall prevail,
Whatever may assail;
He is our shield and tower,
Almighty is His power;
His kingdom is forever.

Rejoice, ye people, praise His name,
His care doth e’er surround us.
His love to error’s thralldom came,
And from its chains unbound us.
Our Lord is God alone,
No other power we own;
No other voice we heed,
No other help we need;
His kingdom is forever.

O then give thanks to God on high,
Who life to all is giving;
The hosts of death before Him fly,
In Him we all are living.
Then let us know no fear,
Our King is ever near;
Our stay and fortress strong,
Our strength, our hope, our song;
His kingdom is forever.
