Sermon on the Mount – “Fulfill God’s Law”

Hymn 461
We cannot turn away from God
because, whichever way we face,
Spirit is there. In every place,
every direction, everywhere,
Spirit is there.

Whether we turn to left or right,
to north or south or east or west,
we meet with Love—and we are blessed.
Upward or down, below, above,
we meet with Love.

Whether we plunge to ocean trench
or plot our course for farthest space,
Love’s law controls. Whatever race
we enter toward whatever goals,
Love’s law controls.

Whether we build for centuries hence
or let tomorrow bound our aim,
God sets the pace. Always the same,
with instant and eternal grace,
God sets the pace.

Ex. 3:1, 2, 7, 10-11; 4:1,-4, 6-7 (NLT)
One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him . . . the Lord told him, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.”

But Moses protested to God, … “Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” . . . . “What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? Then the Lord asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied. “Throw it down on the ground,” the Lord told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back. Then the Lord told him, “Reach out and grab its tail.” So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a shepherd’s staff in his hand. . . . Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out again, his hand was white as snow with a severe skin disease. “Now put your hand back into your cloak,” the Lord said. So Moses put his hand back in, and when he took it out again, it was as healthy as the rest of his body. The Lord said to Moses, “If they do not believe you and are not convinced by the first miraculous sign, they will be convinced by the second sign.

Ex. 20:1-5, 7-8, 12-17 (NLT)
Then God gave . . . all these instructions[::::

“I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. “You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind . .. . You must not bow down to them or worship them. You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Honor your father and mother. You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. You must not covet your neighbor’s house . . .. or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”

Matt. 5:1-2, 17-20 (NLT)
Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them.

I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

Matthew 22:35-39 (NLT)
One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”
Jesus replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

Rom. 3:31 (NLT)
if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not!

Rom. 2;13 (NLT)
For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.

Rom. 7:12, 22-23, 18-19, 24-25 (NLT)
The law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.

I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. . . . Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom. 8:1-2 (KJV)
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

John 4:23-24 (NLT)
The time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Is. 55:8-9, 11-12 (NLT)
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
You will live in joy and peace.

Ps. 19:7-1, 14 (NLT)
The instructions of the lord are perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The commandments of the lord are right,
bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the lord are clear,
giving insight for living.
Reverence for the lord is pure,
lasting forever.
The laws of the lord are true;
each one is fair.
They are more desirable than gold,
even the finest gold.
….
They are a warning to your servant,
a great reward for those who obey them.
May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you,
O lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Is. 33:22 (KJV)
For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.

Mal 3:6 (KJV)
For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

SCIENCE & HEALTH WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, by Mary Baker Eddy

SH 463:27-28
There is a law of God applicable to healing, and it is a spiritual law instead of material.

SH 522:31-1
Does the unerring Principle of divine law change or repent? It cannot be so.

SH 112:16-20, 23-26
From the infinite One in Christian Science comes one Principle and its infinite idea, and with this infinitude come spiritual rules, laws, and their demonstration, which, like the great Giver, are “the same yesterday, and to-day, and forever;” . . .

Any theory of Christian Science, which departs from what has already been stated and proved to be true, affords no foundation upon which to establish a genuine school of this Science.

SH 274:23-25
Divine Science is absolute, and permits no half-way position in learning its Principle and rule — establishing it by demonstration.

SH 496:5
You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself.

SH 448:26-28
If the student adheres strictly to the teachings of Christian Science and ventures not to break its rules, he cannot fail of success in healing.

SH 445:15-18
You render the divine law of healing obscure and void, when you weigh the human in the scale with the divine, or limit in any direction of thought the omnipresence and omnipotence of God.

SH 127:24-26
Truth is not human, and is not a law of matter, for matter is not a lawgiver.

SH 118:26
The definitions of material law, as given by natural science, represent a kingdom necessarily divided against itself, because these definitions portray law as physical, not spiritual. Therefore they contradict the divine decrees and violate the law of Love, in which nature and God are one and the natural order of heaven comes down to earth.

83:16
The belief that the universe, including man, is governed in general by material laws, but that occasionally Spirit sets aside these laws, — this belief belittles omnipotent wisdom, and gives to matter the precedence over Spirit.

SH 73:30-32
The sensual cannot be made the mouthpiece of the spiritual, nor can the finite become the channel of the infinite.

SH 534:18-20
Paul says in his epistle to the Romans: “The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

SH 200:2-4
Pagan worship began with muscularity, but the law of Sinai lifted thought into the song of David.

SH 14:1-16
If we are sensibly with the body and regard omnipotence as a corporeal, material person, whose ear we would gain, we are not “absent from the body” and “present with the Lord” in the demonstration of Spirit. We cannot “serve two masters.” .. . . To be “with the Lord” is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love, — by Spirit, not by matter.

Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well.

SH 2:15-16
Prayer cannot change the Science of being, but it tends to bring us into harmony with it.

SH 273:4-15
Human belief has sought out many inventions, but not one of them can solve the problem of being without the divine Principle of divine Science. Deductions from material hypotheses are not scientific. They differ from real Science because they are not based on the divine law.

Divine Science reverses the false testimony of the material senses, and thus tears away the foundations of error. Hence the enmity between Science and the senses, and the impossibility of attaining perfect understanding till the errors of sense are eliminated.

SH 428:32-4
It is a sin to believe that aught can overpower omnipotent and eternal Life, . . . .

SH 207:10
Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the so-called laws of matter primary, and the law of Spirit secondary. Without this lesson, we lose sight of the perfect Father, or the divine Principle of man.

SH 253:25
Do not believe in any supposed necessity for sin, disease, or death, knowing (as you ought to know) that God never requires obedience to a so-called material law, for no such law exists. The belief in sin and death is destroyed by the law of God, which is the law of Life instead of death, of harmony instead of discord, of Spirit instead of the flesh.

SH 128:4-6
The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man.

SH 183:26-29
Truth casts out all evils and materialistic methods with the actual spiritual law, — the law which gives sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, voice to the dumb, feet to the lame.

SH 470:32
The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history.

SH 174:17-20
The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake the ages, rebuking in their course all error and proclaiming the kingdom of heaven on earth.

SH 423:24
Both Science and consciousness are now at work in the economy of being according to the law of Mind, which ultimately asserts its absolute supremacy.

Hymn 444
I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.
I girded thee, I girded thee,
Though thou hast not even known Me.
But know that from the rising sun
To the west there is none beside Me,
For I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.

I am the Truth, there is none else;
There is no Truth beside Me.
Infinite light, bountiful, bright,
Is ever present to guide thee.
Beloved and free, eternally,
Perfect peace and joy I provide thee,
For I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.

Innocent one, sinless and pure,
Nothing can ever divide thee.
Governed by Love, you’re safe and secure;
I am forever beside thee.
So rest and know wher-e’er you go,
Home and heav’n cannot be denied thee,
For I am the Lord, there is none else;
There is no God beside Me.

Hymn 452:1-3
O Thou unchanging Truth, whose facts eternal
give us the courage to outface the storm,
to rise against the senses’ swift alarm
and stand unmoved at Spirit’s high tribunal,
Thy Word acquits us and Thy Word is final.

O Thou abundant Life, whose freshness daily
admits no common round, no dull routine,
this is our joy and this our discipline,
to take Thy gift of life and use it fully;
this is our highest task, to spend it freely.

O Thou, O boundless Love, forever undiminished,
how far and little seems the lie of pain.
We were with Thee, before the world began, and
shall be with Thee, when the world has vanished;
Thy work is perfect and Thy work is finished.
